Cakaj-Heritage Foundation: Importance of American leadership in the Western Balkan region

Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Gent Cakaj had a meeting with the Heritage Foundation’s Vice President James Jay Carafano and the Foundation’s team of foreign policy, security, and economy experts.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss geo-political developments in the Balkan region, and the challenges facing the region, as well as the need for USA’s attention and presence in the region.

During his stay in Washington, Acting Minister Cakaj had a meeting in the US Department of State with the Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, Mr. Matthew Palmer.
In the course of the meeting, Acting Minister Cakaj and Mr. Palmer exchanged opinions about the recent developments in the Western Balkans, Albania’s role there, its relations with the neighbouring countries, and the prospects of the countries in the region for integration into the Euro-Atlantic structures.

During the Meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Gent Cakaj had a meeting with the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, Jean-Yves Le Drian.
In the course of this meeting, Acting Minister Cakaj introduced Minister Le Drian to the progress of reforms in Albania concerning the five priorities, and to Albania’s expectations for a positive recommendation by the Commission in May, and for the decision by the European Council about the start of negotiations in June.

Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Gent Cakaj attended the Meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers held in Washington to mark 70 years since the founding of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Wednesday evening, the Ministers gathered in the ‘Andrew W. Mellon’ Auditorium, the hall in which the North Alliance Treaty was signed 70 years ago. The event marked the celebration of 7 decades of peace, prosperity, and security for nearly 1 billion people across the Euro-Atlantic region, as well as an opportunity to look to the future together.

In the course of his visit to the USA, Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Gent Cakaj held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs for North Macedonia, Nikola Dimitrov, in the premises of the Embassy of the Republic of Albania in Washington.
This meeting revolved around the efforts put forth by the European Union Member States to launch negotiations, as well as the cooperation between our two countries in areas of common and mutual interest.

On the first day of his stay in Washington, Acting Minister Cakaj met Senator Ron Johnson, Chairman of Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation, and Congressman Lee Zeldin.
