‘’ Meeting between the Albanian and Dutch police on the rights of the LGBT community’’ 22nd of February 2019, Tirana

On 19 & 20 February 2019, the Albanian State Police in cooperation with the Dutch National Police and the Netherlands Helsinki Committee presented a work plan with activities for the project 'Countering discrimination and protecting LGBTI rights in Albania' financed under MATRA program of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project is a clear example of how the Netherlands is pursuing its “strict and fair” policy with Albania in fostering development of the rule of law.
After a successful study tour of the Albanian State Police and Albanian Security Academy organized in the Netherlands last year, the project is making headway. Also another exchange visit was held in the Netherlands (November 2018) with the representatives of 4 municipalities: Kukes, Lezha, Tirana, Vlora.
During the workshop organized this week in Tirana the partnerships and ideas to draft Local Action Plans in combating discrimination and hate crimes at central and local level started to materialize. The success formula of this project lies in the combination of the top-down and bottom up approaches and the extensive outreach it envisages at the local level.
Are there challenges? Indeed! We are all aware of that as much as we are all committed. Together we are stronger and can reach higher!
