The International Conference "The Roads of the Future - Democracy and Development Compromise"

On 9 and 10 May 2014, Ambassador Edmond Trako took part at the III International Conference "The Roads of the Future - Democracy and Development Compromise". This is a traditional event, which is organized every year under the auspices of the President of Portugal and the Champalimaud Foundation.

The main focus of this activity was commemorating the 40th anniversary of the victory of the peaceful revolution of 25 April 1974, which overthrew the Salazar dictatorship system and marked the beginning of the democracy in Portugal.

This International Conference is an initiative that aims to develop a reflection on the major challenges that the Portuguese society will be facing. In this jubilee, the 40th anniversary of one of the most prominent dates in the history of the Portuguese people, Presidency of the Republic aimed to commemorate and honor the April 25, inviting Portuguese to reflect on their future in the most efficient ways, in order to keep up the spirit that inspired the establishing of the democracy in Portugal.

President of Portugal, Prof. Dr. Anibal Cavaco Silva emphasized the importance of the culture of compromise in a democratic society, culture, which according to the Portuguese President, predominates in most EU countries, while its installation in Portugal has faced many difficulties.

Former President of Portugal (1976-1986), General Antonio Ramalho Eanes, one of the leaders of the "Carnation Revolution", in his speech said that it is not important only the remembrance of this historical date, but also, the challenges that Portugal expect in the future.

During the days of the conference were delivered about 15 lectures by politicologists, Euro MPs, academics, etc.
