Independence Day- Greeting from Ambassador Spasse

Dear friends,

Today, Albania's Independence Day finds us physically distanced due to the pandemic. But November 28, with its symbolism, brings together Albanians and their friends no matter how far away they are.

Today, Albanians recall and honor the work of those prominent men and women who made Albania's independence the sole purpose of their lives. Today we bow with respect before the signatories of the act of declaration of independence. But today we remember with equal gratitude those who worked, fought and sacrificed to achieve independence and then to protect it. And among them, many Hungarian friends deserve gratitude.

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

After a long and difficult transition, Albania has approached the final stage that separates it from achieving its strategic goal – the full-fledged membership in the European Union. The country is ready to start the accession negotiation process and I am convinced that in this long, difficult and transformative process, Albania will be a capable and willing partner to share the European common values.

In this journey towards membership, as before in history, Albania has had the sincere and tangible support of Hungary and the Hungarian people. On this occasion, we express our gratitude for the Hungarian assistance with equipment, money and experts after last year's two earthquakes, for the assistance provided this year in the fight against the spread of Covid-19, as well as for the Hungarian experts of EU integration, already attached to the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

Although the pandemic has caused the postponement of several joint economic and cultural projects, it has not affected the very good bilateral relations. Physical contacts at political level have continued, as have economic and trade exchanges. We note with satisfaction that the interest for Albania, as a destination for tourism and investment, is growing. This fact adds to our confidence that with the end of the pandemic, the elaborated ideas and accumulated energies will bring about an intensification of cooperation between the two countries.

By concluding, dear friends, I wish you a happy Independence Day.
