Roma Active Albania and ERGO Network Award the Most Roma Friendly Mayors in the European Parliament

On 19 November 2019, was held in the European Parliament the award ceremony for "The most Roma friendly mayor". The event was organized as part of the project "Joint Initiative to Empower   Roma Civil Society in the Western Balkans and Turkey", led by ‘Roma Activ Albania’ in cooperation with ERGO Network and funded by the European Union. This activity includes the countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey, where civil society organizations in each country nominate a mayor whose role best evidences the contribution of the local authority that represents to further protect and promote the rights of this community in their societies.
 
The award for Albania this year was given to Ms. Majlinda Bufi - Mayor of Roskovec for her role and dedication in involving the Roma community of this municipality as much as possible, protecting their rights and creating better conditions for them, inclusion in the social programs, adoption and implementation of measures to enable their education, employment, housing, etc. In her speech, Ms. Bufi emphasized that there is no need to set up special nurseries, kindergartens or schools for this community, but the work should continue on approaching their inclusion without discriminations from the rest, in order to have a society developed by the European standards.
