“Together for Europe’s recovery” - Germany's EU Presidency priorities

PanEuropa Bulgaria, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the German Embassy in Sofia have virtually presented the priorities of the German Presidency of the European Council.

Supporting the path of European integration of the Western Balkan countries, promoting the EU enlargement process and holding the First Intergovernmental Conference with Albania and Northern Macedonia remain among the main priorities of the German Presidency which include overcoming Covid-19 pandemic, economic and social recovery, a stronger and more innovative Europe, a fair Europe, a sustainable Europe, a Europe of security and common values, a strong Europe in the world. In this context, the German Ambassador in Bulgaria, Christoph Eichhorn expressed Germany's support for Albania and Northern Macedonia, hoping to hold the first intergovernmental conference as soon as possible. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ekaterina Zaharieva also stressed that Albania has met most of the criteria, but much remains to be done. Of course, the process will be based on merit - she said.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Hoxha expressed her gratitude for the assistance provided by Bulgaria and the EU during the pandemic, highlighting that the pandemic showed that the EU remains the most important partner for the countries of the Western Balkans. Ambassador Hoxha thanked the Croatian Ambassador, Jasna Ognjanovac for the difficult Croatian presidency, which, despite rewriting its priorities, managed to open membership negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia, and expressed confidence that the first intergovernmental conference would be held during the German presidency.
